The 2012 STPA dues forms and rules for the STPA Better Newspaper Contest have been mailed out. Watch for them in the coming days. Dues ($75) must be paid before entering the contest. Send dues to STPA, Jeff Berger, Secretary-Treasurer, P.O. Box 400, Hondo, TX 78861.

A few things to note...
* Entry fees on the STPA contest have gone up to $7 per category. This was necessary because with the addition of the Journalist and Photographer of the Year awards, we are now presenting more hardware than we used to, and the costs of the awards were putting the contest into the red. An entry fee of $7 per category should help alleviate that. All categories are pretty much the same (if I'm wrong, I'm sure our contest chairman, Cyndy Slovak-Barton, will set matters straight.)

* The early postmark/shipping bill deadline for the contest is Friday, Feb. 3. Early entry will save members $5. The final postmark deadline is Friday, Feb. 10.

* Send entries for the contest to 2012 STPA Contest, c/o Hays Free Press, P.O. Box 2530, Kyle, TX 78640, but all that info is on the contest info forms.

* Our convention is Thursday-Saturday, April 19-21, at the St. Anthony Hotel in downtown San Antonio -- it's our first convention downtown since our 75th anniversary celebration 10 years ago. The convention falls during Fiesta (the first weekend, not Battle of Flowers/Flambeau weekend) so it isn't too early to make reservations. The reservation number is 1-800-WYNDHAM. The website is www.thestanthonyhotel.com. Convention chairman Jason Jarrett worked out a great rate of $109 per night. The reservation deadline is Thursday, March 29.

The South Texas Press Association (STPA) was established in 1926 to promote the welfare of, encourage ethical practices in, and protect the interests of the newspaper publishing industry in the South Texas.

The STPA is a Community of Newspapers and the largest regional press association in the country.

The STPA also sponsors two $2,000 Internship Programs providing eight weeks of on-the-job training for college students with a member newspaper. It also awards two $1,500 Scholarships to a deserving college student pursuing a degree in a journalism-related field and to a college-bound graduating high school senior who is pursuing a career in a journalism-related field.

STPA membership comes in five classes: active, individual, associate, participating, and honorary. Annual membership meeting and convention is held each April. Membership dues are $75 per year.
