El Campo Leader-News and the Fayette County Record

The South Texas Press Association will once again be sponsoring its Summer Internship Program for the summer of 2012. This year, two $2,000 STPA internships will be awarded. All STPA newspapers are invited, and encouraged, to participate in this program. Newspapers must be dues-paying STPA members for the current year.

April 1, 2012 is the deadline for newspapers to apply for the 2012 Internship Program. The two newspapers selected to participate will be notified by April 10. Click here to download complete rules and entry participation form in pdf format.

The major requirement for newspapers that are selected is that they pay a minimum salary of $300 per week for eight (8) weeks. Following the term of employment, the newspaper must submit proof of payment to the STPA which in turn will reimburse the newspaper $2,000 after the conclusion of the intern's employment.

In return, you get a needed extra staffer for eight weeks and the satsifaction of helping a young person go on to a possible career as a journalist.

The major requirements for the intern are that he/she preferably be enrolled in jr. college/community college/college/university and either be taking journalism/advertising/photography/English-related course, or have had working experience on a collegiate newspaper.

However, high school seniors will also be considered for the internship.

The newspapers selected to participate must find their own individual who meets intern qualifications.

A photo of the intern and a story, written by the intern about his/her experience, must be submitted at the end of the intern program for publication in the annual STPA Bulletin. The newspaper will not be reimbursed its $2,000 until pay record, intern story and photo have been submitted to the Intern chairman. Pay record, story and picture must be submitted to Intern chairman no later than Dec. 30.
